In fact, it is a world-wide feat that fans and soccer enthusiasts enjoy every 4 years. What a little Soccer player and fan who lives in the barrio of brazil, Nigeria, Haiti, Senegal does not know is that his viewership is already bought by one major company. Adidas Group, in its efforts to shut Nike Inc. out, bought huge blocks of commercial ads in the United States and Germany. It has put aside $200 million to market everything soccer. The giant company which acquired Rebok in a megadeal will promote soccer shoes, jerseys, national teams, soccer balls. It will feature more soccer-related content in the $multimillion ad campaign titled, "+10" to mean that it takes 10 +1 players to form a team. The other unmentioned player in this media blitz may be a competitor to reckon with, Nike Inc, this oregon, US-based company. Adidas is the official sponsor of the June-July world cup games which are much bigger than the Olympics and American football superbowl games combined.
Adidas Group reached into its deep pocket to buy the rights of the game just to seal its competitive edge over Nike in the world of Soccer. So Nike is shut out of TV ads in the U.S. for all 64 games. Adidas has amassed lots of valuable info sponsoring competitions in many countries of the world. It is also the same company that brought us the $250 computerized running shoe equipped with a microchip that senses fit and performance. Adidas's goals are to maximize its products during these games. They also want to build brand loyalty with all the soccer fans all over the world. This is a fight to control a communal moment that most marketers would die for. Hey, at least a few times a year, fans relish the attention that is being placed on them. Their eyeballs count! Nike also sets its goals high. It has already started the game, way before June 9. It is not happy to be shut out this mega soccer event. It wants Adidas to joga or play nice a la Bresilienne or Brasilian style! It can not even find outdoor signs to place its ads in Germany. Nike has to do something about Adidas's arrogance. It wants to enlist your help. It wants fans to network. Nike is going virtual and viral! It is a wow moment, a aha time! Nike Inc wants its loyal shoppers to go digital on joga.com. Joga will roll out in 140 countries in 14 languages. Nike wants its own myspace for soccer fans. Joga.com is supposed to be a social network, a virtual watercooler where fans can come to comment on the games they have watched on TV. They can talk about their favorite players and teams, download videos and create discussion groups. Backed by Google know-how and technological muscle, Nike wants to take on its archrival, nemesis. Nike does not want to sit around and feel sorry for itself. It wants to use its Nike stars and a word from Portuguese, Brasil's official language to create a mass movement.
